Awards Training Overview

In order to support the development of life sustaining rescue, water safety and first aid skills, members of the Altona Life Saving Club are eligible to apply for training across a wide range of learning areas.

These nationally accredited and recognised award training courses are provided either directly by Altona Life Saving Club or in conjunction with club in the Melbourne metropolitan area and will depend upon the availability of trainers and expected participant numbers.

The following awards are available to members of the Altona Life Saving Club, subject to endorsement by the club's Member Development Manager. 


Aquatic Rescue Awards

 

  „Surf Rescue Certificate

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling under the guidance of more experienced patrolling members. Surf awareness and patrol skills can be developed in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. This course is the minimum qualification required to conduct event / activity water safety. Minimum qualification for any water safety Example. Nippers water safety, Carnival water safety, triathlon water safety.

  • Participants must be at least 13 years of age and swim 200 metres in a pool in less than 5 minutes.

  

  Bronze Medallion

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia.

  • Participants must be at least 15 years of age and swim 400 metres in a pool in less than 9 minutes.

 

  Silver Medaillion Basic Beach Management

Gain skills, knowledge and experience to manage a beach in emergency and non emergency situations. Learn responsibilities and Duties of Patrol Captain/Lifesaver, regulations, media management, risk management, liaising with other organizations, search and rescue, navigation, patrol methods, rescue scenarios.  The course is aimed at people wishing to be Patrol Captains, Lifeguards and Lifeguard Supervisors.

 

  Resuscitation Certificate (AID)

Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to perform CPR during an emergency.

  • Participants must be at least 13 years of age on the date of final assessment.

 

  First Aid Certificate (AID)

Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to manage emergency first aid situations until professional medical support is available. This course is recognised by WorkCover VIC.

  • Candidates must be at least 14 years of age on the date of final assessment.

  

  Advanced Resuscitation Techniques

Develops skills and knowledge to use oxygen, airway management devices, and automated external defibrillators during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to conscious or unconscious breathing causalities.

  • Participants must be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment and hold at least Bronze Medallion.

  

  Spinal Management

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to manage injured casualties with suspected spinal injuries in an aquatic environment and in emergency situations.

  • Candidates must be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment and hold at least Bronze Medallion. 

Power Craft Awards

 

  IRB Crew

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations.

  • Participants must be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment and currently proficient in Bronze Medallion.

 

 Silver Medallion IRB Driver

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations.

 

  • Participants must be at least 17 years of age and be a proficient Bronze Medallion.
  • Proficient in IRB Crew and hold a current boat licence.

Junior Development Programs

 

  Nippers Age Manager

This course is to support those individuals who wish to undertake Age Manager responsibilities within their Nippers program.  The program focuses on providing participants with the requisite skills and knowledge to be able to facilitate a Nippers session across a range of activity types. This course ensures age managers are aware of their obligations towards junior lifesavers, and also provides them with the skills to assist Nippers in their growth towards being future lifesavers.


Additional Advanced Qualifications Available

 A range of other advanced Life Saving qualifications are available for interested members including:

  Training Officer Certificate

This course is aimed at teaching participants the skills and knowledge required to be able to facilitate training sessions for the Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate, IRB and other recognised Life Saving qualifications.

  • Participants must be a minimum of 16 years to be eligible to participate in this course.

 

  Assessor Certificate

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the requisite skills and knowledge to be able to assess individuals participating within the Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate, IRB and other recognised Life Saving qualifications training courses.

  • Participants must be a minimum of 18 years to undertake this program.
