The Victorian Senior Surf Carnival season begins in December and culminates with the Senior State Championships in March each year. To compete at Senior Surf Carnivals members need to hold a Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion, and be 13 yr of age.
There are many events that may be contested at each carnival including:
- Surf Boats
- Surf Ski
- Surf Swimming
- Rescue & Resuscitation
- Beach Sprints and Flags
The winter carnival season includes Pool Lifesaving and Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) competition. Pool competition includes obstacle races, line throw and manikin rescues, with carnivals in the June to August period. Currently Altona does not partake in IRB competition.

Carnival Entry Requirements
To be entered into carnivals members must be financial and be proficient for their Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion. The national requirement is for competitors to complete a minimum of 16 hr of patrol to compete at State and National Titles. Due to limited numbers of patrolling members at Altona we expect a minimum of 25 hr of patrol per season (5 patrols at 5 hr per patrol). If members are absent from patrol and do not organise a replacement they will not be entered in future competitions.
For the boat crew, a competition levy of $120 is due before the start of the season. The crew will not be entered in any carnivals until all rowers have paid. Any additional competition costs will be invoiced at the end of the season. All other senior competitors, an entry form with evidence of payment (or cash) and drop it in the entry box before a competitor will be entered. Payments can be made via cash, bank transfer (BSB: 633000, Account: 127768844, include your surname in the reference field) or by credit card by going to www.slsa.com.au go to the Members tab (2nd from the right), select Club and Member Resources, in the Quick Links table select Payment Gateway. Once there choose Altona as your club, select membership/carnival fees as the Transaction Type and follow the prompts. Entries close on the Sunday before the carnival. If you have been entered in a carnival and you are unable to attend you need to inform the Competition Manager before the carnival or you will still be required to pay the entry fee. It is very important you inform the Competition Manager of your attendance as it affects entry fees and the number of officials and water safety we need to provide. Entry fees are $23 and $35 for the State Championships.
